18th INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON MACHINE DESIGN AND PRODUCTION

We are pleased to invite you to UMTIK 2018, the 18th International Conference on Machine Design and Production, to take place on July 3-6, 2018 in Eskişehir. Eskişehir is such a city in Turkey where the technology, arts and culture, history and the social life have such a harmony, mutually nourishing each other. This special nature of Eskişehir urged us to organize this conference somehow in a different format from our previous conferences especially for the first day. The first day activities of the conference program will be devoted to discuss the positive reflections of the advances in machine design and production technologies to the people' s life in all aspects, as case studies for Eskişehir and elsewhere.
During the first day, a panel will be organized to discuss the expectations of Eskişehir from technological developments and innovations in machine design and production for sustainable and better life. Panelists will be selected from local academia and industry, municipalities, professional, regional development agency, cultural and social communities, etc. An active moderator will be conducting the panel in a provocative way between the panelists and the participants. Panel language will be Turkish, but there will be simultaneous Turkish-English and English-Turkish translation.
First day sessions are planned to be on the use of new technologies and innovations for the benefits of society and economy of Eskişehir in particular and elsewhere in general. The following four topics are suggested for the sessions. You are welcome to submit papers on those and/or related topics.
- Meerschaum (lületaşı): technologies and innovations in production, enhancement, design and new applications of various grades of the material
- Handicrafts such as glassware, woodenware and earthenware: use of new and innovative processes, machines, tooling to increase the value of handicrafts and enhance sustainability of the artwork
- New systems, machines, products, tools, aids and innovations developed to ease the life of handicapped and elderly people
- Impacts of Industry 4.0 applications in industry, in housing, in society and in public services
We are planning to organize new activities special to this conference:
- Tutorial sessions on the use of software: Use of software on engineering analyses, design, simulation, virtual reality, life cycle management, production planning and control, ERP, industrial design, fashion and art design, etc. have already become essential components of successful individuals and companies. The use of the right and the integrable software with the other activities of the companies can give an highly advantageous position in training engineers to handle complicated engineering projects. Correct use of software in universities may also give a great leverage in educational and research activities. Software companies are invited to sponsor the conference and to organize tutorials for the participants from industry and academia. For this purpose, it is planned to set up a room with a network of about 20 terminals. Participants can plug into the network with their laptops and communicate with the host computer of the software tutor. Tutorial sessions of 2-4 hours will be scheduled in the 4-day conference program and announced as part of it. The registered participants will have the right to enroll to a specified number of the tutorials on the basis of first come-first served.
- Industrial trips to various factories will be announced at the conference web site. The registered participants will be requested to enroll to a specified number of visits on the basis of first come-first served
- Social activities, such as tours to museums and historical sites, cultural activities: art works exhibitions, concerts, etc. will be organized for the participants and spouses. Some will be free of charge, some will require payment. All will be announced at the web site, requiring early registration.
- Workshops, exhibitions and competitions on handicraft artwork: In Eskişehir handicrafts are constituting an important part of the cultural and social life, history and economy of the city. One can find quite a few workshops where different handicraft activities on meerschaum, glassware, woodware and earthenware; etc, take place. Besides, there are museums on handicrafts heritage; such as, meerschaum museum, glassware museum, woodware museum. Artists are invited to come, exhibit and practice their work together with the local artists of Eskişehir to learn from each other. Competitions in some selected topics are planned to be organized
- Seminar programs can be proposed and organized depending on demand from industry and academia.
If you would like to organize a parallel activity, such as a workshop, seminar, competition, exhibition, etc. on the mutual interaction between technology and social life, cultural and historical heritage, etc. on the first day or on the other days of the conference, please let us know sending an e-message to umtik@umtik.com with your brief CV, objective, scope, duration, required facilities, conditions of participation, etc.

All from academia and industry willing to disseminate, share and advance their knowledge and expertise are welcome to participate in UMTIK 2018 as authors or audience members. With this call, we encourage you to submit your ideas about special sessions or any other activities that you would like to organize on the topics of your choice within the main frame of the conference. As the topics and the organizers of the special sessions and other activities are clarified, they will be announced at UMTIK 2018 web pages which are expected to be available before the end of October (www.umtik.com). With our new web site, you will be able to submit your contributions on-line to the special session or the activity you intend to participate. If you plan to organize a special session or an activity, you need to send your proposal with your short CV to the Organizing Committee for approval. Organizers of the special sessions and other activities will be responsible for collection, evaluation and editing of the contributions in the conference format and submitting them to the Organizing Committee within the announced deadline using UMTIK 2018 web site. The organizers are expected to chair the special sessions and the activities they organize.
The venue for UMTIK 2018 is Tasigo Hotel (http://www.tasigohotels.net), located on the hills of Odunpazarı having a panoramic view of Eskişehir. The conference participants staying at Tasigo Hotel will take the advantage of free use of indoor and outdoor pools, spa center and Turkish Hamam. Odunpazarı is within a walking distance to the Hotel. It is an authentic old town with historical buildings, museums, handicraft workshops, eating places.
Important Dates for UMTIK 2018 are:
- Manuscript Submission Due: January 12th, 2018
- Notification of Acceptance: March 30th, 2018
- Revised Manuscript Submission and Author Registration Due: April 27th, 2018
- Announcement of the Conference Program: June 1st, 2018
